How might you improve the research environment so that marketing knowledge to industry can be enhanched?

- We shall encrease our efforts to introduce the patented technologies to relevant companies and invite them to collaborate. However, in order to do so, we have to know them, and they have to know us, and the companies must understand what a research institution has to consider.

How would you respond to views that the patent offices of the institutions are not "professional enough" because you deal with too few cases?

- The number of inventions may not be the equally numerous at all institutions, but we join forces with professional advisers on a case to case. Basically the companies are responsible for transforming reseach into commercial results. We do what we can to make the collaboration more effective and productive. The web portal techtrans.dk and the yearly commercialisation surveys are good examples of that.

Do you have a policy for commercialising and patenting at the individual institutions?

- All institutions have a patent policy. On the one hand, the techtrans office have to consider the availability of funds for research from the EU, for instance, by finding interesting partners through our patents. On the other hand, we should be able to offer the companies the rights they need to create a commercial success. Unfortunately, the two considerations do not always correspond.

Do you represent research institutions or are you engaged in the promotion new businesses?

- First and foremost we are research institutions. However, we are very much aware that research can take place in collaboration with businesses for the benefit of society as a whole.
